Limiting beliefs are self-imposed barriers to success. The moment you change them, you can become limitless.
– Fahim Lashkaria –
We often hear motivational speakers talking about limiting beliefs. What are these limiting beliefs?
Many times we even don’t know we have them. Even though we try to move forward but something stops us. We repeat it over and over again and hence stay where we are.
Now the question is what are these limiting beliefs and how they develop?
How Limiting Beliefs Develop?
You will be amazed to hear this. Major beliefs are created during childhood between the age of 3-8 and later our bad experiences make them concrete.
Our surroundings create these limiting beliefs. These surroundings include family, relatives, friends, society, good or bad experiences, etc.
Let me explain. Have you ever been to a circus?
We see some animals tied near the gate for attraction. In those animals, have you seen a giant elephant?
The elephant’s leg is tied to a rope, which he can easily break or even pull out. But the elephant doesn’t pull that? Do you know why?
When the elephant was small, they tied its leg to the same rope. The elephant tried to pull it but was unable to do so. The elephant lives in this barrier for years and has developed this limiting belief that the rope is unbreakable.
We also see that those people who have over caring parents are less likely to take risks in life. Their parents have instilled a limiting belief in them and thus they can’t do it.
This is how beliefs are instilled during childhood. Thus, I always tell my clients, relatives, friends and loved ones not to limit your child. This even leads to lower self-esteem.
In 8th grade, I took part in a song competition and failed. This developed my fear of the stage and I couldn’t speak in front of people. For about many years, I was shy to speak. This is how our experiences shape our beliefs.
Don’t worry. This is not the end. You can overcome limiting beliefs if you are seriously committed.
5 Practical Ways To Overcome Limiting Beliefs
After all these years working on myself and then as a life coach, I have found 5 practical ways that will help you overcome your limiting beliefs. These solutions include both related to your mind and your body.
Question Your Limiting Beliefs
Questions always lead to answers. The Law of Gravitation was discovered with a question. So question your limiting beliefs. Why you have it? What made this?
Take a step back. Sit and watch the replay of your life. See people around you who have done this. Why they can do it and what’s missing.
The psychological effect of questioning is that our mind now has doubts about our limiting beliefs. So, to follow a doubtful belief is the job of a fool. Thus, you don’t stop until you find an answer. This is the first step.
Find The Cause
When you ask questions you are sure to get the answers. Sometimes it might take time. You will have to dig more, ask people and go down to the root cause.
Amending the base is the most important thing. If the base is perfect the whole building will be perfect.
Finding the root cause will help amend the experience that caused it and give you a better understanding of the problem.
Reprogram Your Subconscious
We live our life according to the programs fed by others, we need to reprogram our subconscious mind to get what we want. Getting too technical? Right.
The conscious mind is responsible for logic and reasoning. It controls all our actions and reactions based on your belief system.
These beliefs are made with your past experiences. These beliefs are stored in your subconscious mind and your conscious mind will always act or react based on these beliefs.
Now, this has become your belief of failure and will stop you from doing it. This can be easily changed just by experiencing a better response.
This is what mentors and coaches do. They provide you a better, optimistic, encouraging experience that fills you with the courage to do things that you once thought you can’t do. What they do is help you reprogram your mind.
Thus, it is clear that whatever program your subconscious holds your conscious will react accordingly and by reprogramming your subconscious mind you can change your current state of life from miserable to happy and abundant.
I have written a detailed article on simple exercises to reprogram your subconscious mind.
The mind and body are interconnected. You cannot be confident with a lazy body image.
Just try a simple exercise. Sit on a chair. Lean forward. Now say “I am powerful.”
Did you feel any sensation?
Now, sit erect, pull your chest out, take a deep breath and now say, “I am powerful.”
Did you feel any sensation? The answer is yes.
This proves that if your mind and body don’t match, you are less likely to be successful in applying them.
Develop habits that support your new belief. This will inspire you to take the action. If you want to feel confident, develop confident habits. Talk, walk, sit and behave like confident people.
Take The Leap Of Faith – Action
If you can’t run, walk and if you can’t walk, crawl. But take action. Be a doer and not just a thinker. I waited for 7 years to speak on stage. It just took 5 seconds to take action.
Don’t fear action. Even if you fail, I guarantee you will be ahead of the place where you are now. The secret to success is action. You can make 1000 plans. They are just paper until you at upon them.
Identify the purpose of your belief and where it came from. Start questioning it. Is it still valid or useful?
If you find that it is not valid or useful, replace it with a new belief. The new belief must be in line with your values and that’ll support you in achieving your goals.
Beliefs are patterns that the brain has identified. Retrain it by feeding with new patterns. This will help you rewire your brain. Take the charge.
